There are certain populations within our population that are doing something about their health/fitness.
To illustrate what I mean: imagine a teardrop shape. Then imagine that whole population, in relation to their health-knowledge/lifestyle, inside this teardrop.
At the thinnest part of the teardrop, the very top portion, about 10-15%, get it and are doing it. What do I mean by that? I mean they get what it takes to improve their health and fitness, and they’re actively making the sacrifices to do those things. They realize its about eating clean – lean meat, vegetables, nuts & seeds, some fruit, little starch, NO SUGAR. They know to eat real food, not too much, and mostly plants. They know the best recipe for their health/fitness – exercises that are constantly varied, functional movements that are performed at high intensity. It’s that prescription that yields the greatest results towards their goals and gives them the greatest chance at longevity & functionality in their daily lives as they age.
Now, let’s move down this teardrop shape. Not the thickest part of the teardrop, but still not near the top. The next 20-30% of our population is working hard and making sacrifices, but they still don’t get it. They’re working out 3-4-5 days a week, but they’re the the people you see using the elliptical, and reading magazines. They’re doing bicep curls & calf raises and still not seeing any results, and they don’t understand why! These guys are not eating what they desire – all the bad foods for you. But, it’s still foods that don’t really move the needle either. Think – fat free bagels, “Smart Food” popcorn, and maybe a Diet Coke. They don’t get what food our body properly operates off of, and which foods cause inflammation.
Finally, the bottom portion of the teardrop is the last 50-60% of people that just don’t get it and who aren’t doing it. They are the people who don’t have a gym membership or anything similar to that, nor are they concerned about what they eat. They might even smoke cigarettes, and eat a donut every day.
My goal as a gym owner and one who is passionate about sharing my knowledge of good health isn’t to get the most elite/knowledgable clients in my gym, although we love having them too! I am in the business of first targeting the next subsection of individuals. Those guys who are actively looking for fitness & good nutrition but still haven’t found what works. They haven’t reached their goals and they haven’t seen good consistent results from their exercise & nutrition. I want to guide them towards the light.
Once I believe I have a solid stable business that sustains itself without me I will then be moving towards the last group – who don’t care and don’t know why they should care. Educating them on why it would benefit them to care about their wellness will be my project. I will show them the way to a better life then I will create the opportunity for them to change their lives as well.
Who wants to join me for the journey?
